In the stripped skirting
See the pine and the glory
Wisdom oozes in the oiled boards
Love reigns in the grain.
Here a knot will show
Where anger spread to a branch,
Mercy succumbs to gravity,
And love falls away like a leaf.
In dusty rooms the lovers kneel
Sanding down the days.
Resentment like worm,
Sleeps in the dry wood.
