We might imagine
Lot and Eurydice meeting,
How they console each other
Mutter sympathies, heads down
Share the shamefulness
Of their spouses’ disobedience
Shake their heads
Recalling how they warned them—
‘Don’t look back!
He doesn’t like us to ignore him,
He doesn’t like us to disobey.’
‘No, no’—their spouses are calling
‘Its just that He doesn’t like us to look,
He doesn’t like us to see.’
But the obedient ones
Have long ago learned
Not to turn round
When they hear voices in their heads.
Orpheus weeps,
Sometimes Lot’s wife
Swims a little
In his tears.
