I suddenly awoke this morning
to find the bed beside me
unslept in for nearly four years

Frantic, I leapt from the bed
and scattered to the children’s bedrooms
to find the beds immaculately groomed
like well-kept graves

and I wouldn’t mind so much
but I still need them

Choking back the anger
I turned from the rooms
to find her lucky black cat
cowering in the hall

Lunging, I sent her
scattering up the hall
trapping her against the kitchen door

Displaying her like a trophy
I held her to the kitchen window
for the benefit of the neighbour
hanging out washing

and I wouldn’t mind so much
but I still need her
