Children explode through school gates in a swarm
of blue, a surging wave that breaks between cars
held to attention in swirling, shriekish air,
an enthusiasm that evaporates in every direction,
until the stray dog is stray again, and shadows
realign themselves with falling silence, twilight,
a scatter of leaves, blown first one way, then another.
