Stéphane Mallarmé (1842–1898) was a French poet and critic. He was a
major figure in French symbolist poetry, and his work anticipated several
revolutionary artistic schools of the early 20th century, such as Cubism,
Futurism, Dadaism, and Surrealism. His poem ‘Un coup de dés jamais n’abolira
le hasard’ is considered a key text in European literary modernism.
