The Stinging Fly invites artists to submit potential cover art for our magazine. Submissions are open from now until Friday, August 11th, and interested artists can send their work through our Submittable page here.
In November last year, we published a special All New Writers issue, dedicated to showcasing work by writers we have not published before. In keeping with the spirit of this issue, we put out a call for artists with whom we hadn’t previously worked to submit potential cover art for the issue. We were delighted by the response, and by the wonderful pieces sent to us for consideration. Through that open call we found our two most recent cover artists: Philip Moss and Pat Curran.
We’ve been publishing new writing for the past twenty-five years, and over 66 issues we are proud to have featured the work of many inspiring and innovative visual artists, photographers and designers on our covers. Other recent cover artists have included Shane Keisuke Berkery, Kirsty Woods, Maeve Curtis, Lee Welch, Róisín O’Sullivan and Melissa O’Donnell (featured above). You can see all our beautiful issue covers here. It’s a diverse spread—you will see that there is no one style, tone or medium we are drawn to. Each cover is vibrant, striking, and representative of the soul and calibre of the writing on the pages inside.
We do not require artists to create new work to a particular theme, or to closely reflect that we’re an Irish literary magazine with specific motifs or imagery. What we want to see is your work and your talent, the ideas that you’re drawn to and feel passionate about. We’re excited to find existing pieces that are fresh, striking, and specific to their artist’s personal style and approach. What excites you will excite us.
We invite artists to put forward up to three images for consideration.
Artists must be over 18 and live on the island of Ireland and/or consider Ireland to be their home.
Our cover artists receive payment of 400 euro.
