On the third night another tailless cat appeared. This one was much fatter than the others. She had a white body and her back was covered with small brown spots, like beauty marks. She was calm at first, but that changed when she saw me. Not knowing what to do next, she skulked down submissively, and froze. Then, as
if caught by sniper fire, she dropped out of the windowsill and passed out cold. After a moment, she awoke and whimpered, which did not last long. A spasm took control, and she writhed. Her tight little jaw clenched. I waited, counting the seconds until it was over. She was barely discernible from the broadloom in the dull light. I do not know why she came here to die.
